The Telemark canal

Vrådal Lock Museum

The museum is situated by the lock Småstraum , one of the two locks in Vrådal. The museum shows and tells the story of the highest locks in Northern Europe, the ship traffic at Vråvatn and Lake Nisser, log-floating and how the locks were built around the last century. It is open when the boat M/S Fram passes Småstraum lock.


Kviteseid Rural Museum and Kviteseid Old Church

What was a Western Telemark grand farm like some 200 years ago? The answer to that question is to be found at Kviteseid Rural Museum.

At the museum is also an exhibition hall showing the works of the local sculptor Gunnar Utsond. The museum is situated close to the ancient church of Kviteseid. The museum at Kviteseid offers activities for the whole family:

The Open-Air Museum. Most houses are open so that you may have a look inside and imagine how life was like some 200 years ago. The main building, the Flekstveitstoga, is a prominent farmhouse, the ground floor dates to the 1600s. Let the guides tell you more about life and customs in the old days.

The Old Church at Kviteseid is a roman style church built in the 1100s. Inside the 1,5 meter thick stonewalls are as much mystery and atmosphere as in any Norwegian stave church. Gunnar Utsond. A special collection of sculptures shows the works of professor Gunnar Utsond. Among all the sculptures is also his masterpiece "Helferd" which won the gold medal at the 1900 World Exposition in Paris.

The Sculptor's Nook. In one of the corners of the museum hall visitors are free to make their own sculptures and put their works on display. Feel what it is like to be an artist! Goes treasure hunting! At the museum you are welcome to go hunting after the treasure of the mysterious silver-smith Olav Grå (Olav Grey). From 9. June to 15. August open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. In July, open every day from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Norwegian Ski Adventure Centre in Morgedal

Sondre Norheim, the father of modern skiing, was born in Morgedal in 1825. Through advanced multi media shows, breathtaking films, exciting exhibitions and sound- and light effects Norsk skieventyr in Morgedal presents 4000 years of ski history.

The multi media shows offer a unique opportunity to learn more about Norwegian ski history and to understand how important skiing has been in the Norwegian culture. The show presents you to ancient rock carvings, the Vikings, the Birchlegs, the laps, Sondre Norheim and modern winter sports as well as giving you panoramic pictures of Norwegian winter landscapes. Inside the exhibition hall is a ski factory showing how skies were made at the times of the famous Sondre Norheim.

You will also find an identical copy of the cotter's cabin where he used to live. In another part of the exhibition hall you get to know Olav Bjaaland who was part of the famous Roald Amundsen expedition to the South Pole in 1911.

And of course, Norsk skieventyr presents the history of the Olympic Flame which was brought from Morgedal to The Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952, Squaw Valley in 1960 and Lillehammer in 1994.

Åmdals Verk Mines

Åmdals Verk mines is one of the oldest mine sites in Norway, dating back to 1540 when King Christian III of Denmark-Norway sent German miners to Telemark.

Mine tours. Each day there are guided tours in the mines giving a realistic impression of what life was like for the miners.

Miniature models. In the exhibition hall there are miniature models of most functions in the mine production. All the models give a true impression of the work process at Åmdals Verk.

Exhibition of geology. Åmdals Verk is also a local centre of geology presenting for the first time its own exhibition. The exhibition contains a topographic model of the mine area and shows how copper was being processed. An adventurous evening. At Åmdals Verk you may experience the navvy culture through stories, songs, dramatising and typical navvy food.

Vest-Telemark Museum and Eidsborg Stave church

The museum at Eidsborg offers a wide range of activities for the whole family. The permanent exhibitions show Western Telemark's largest collection of rose painting, knives, vessels, folk costumes, silver and agricultural machinery. In one of the exhibition rooms you may learn the interesting history of the Eidsborg whetstone export.

Eidsborg Stave Church is situated at the museum area.
The museum guides will tell you the fascinating history of the church - from medieval to modern times. Do not miss the exhibition of the local style of building which particularly focuses on the stave churches.

The Open-Air Museum is a collection of more than 30 ancient buildings, some of them dating back to the Middle Ages. Let the museum guides tell you the story of how people used to live in the houses. Have you thought about why all the beds are so short? And why did they hammer their milk teeth into their chairs? Special exhibition traces the history of Western Telemark folk costumes.

Vest-Telemark Museum also cares for the children. At the museum children may construct their own log houses, go treasure hunting or be trained in the art of shooting with a bow and arrows. Larsstoga café offers food and beverages in historic surroundings.

The stave church is open until 6 pm in July.

Grimdalstunet

Grimdalstunet is a museum built to honour the artist Anne Grimdalen, on here birth place, Grimdalen. Anne Grimdalen made the sculptures on the town hall in Oslo, and has got sculptures in both Paris and New York. She is mostly known for her children and animal sculptures. At the museum you will find sculptures and the house where she was born.
The museum is open between May and September, groups also at other times. The museum is located 35 minutes drive from Vrådal.

Bø Sommarland

Make a day's outing to the family park Bø Summerland. This is the place with activities both for adults and children. The park is well known for its many water activities such as the biggest waterslide in Europe and a huge surfing wave.
In addition to this there are many other activities to do. For example, there is a "gambling land" and there are many nice dining places for the whole family. Bø Summerland is situated about 55 min. drive from Vrådal.
