Trips by car

Tour 1: WEST TELEMARK ROUND TRIP

From Vrådal, follow Rv 38 by Vråliosen to Åmdals Verk Gruver, a mining museum with an interesting collection based on copper mines dating back to 1540. Guided walks in the old mines.

The next stop is Grimdalstunet. Here you can see the childhood home of the sculptress Anne Grimdalen, a mountain farm dating back to the 17th century which today houses a museum with art gallery. It’s the only intact farm from the barter economy in Telemark with 10 buildings and a grinding mill. And they are all in their original position.

After Grimdalestunet it’s further on to Dalen , which is situated 70 meters above sea level. Here you'll find a particularly nice climate with several rare orchids and other thermopile plants and trees. The Bandak Canal (the Telemark Canal) has its ending point here. A stop for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat at the traditional Dalen Hotel, a large wooden structure built in dragon style, gives you an experience of the start of tourism here over a hundred years ago. In Dalen you’ll also find Tokke Kraftstasjon, which once was the largest hydro-electric power station in Scandinavia. In the summer you can get a free tour.

"Ravnejuvet" is also worth a visit. Follow Rv 38 towards Åmot to Liosvingen and drive on the county road towards Gøytil. From the road you'll follow a path for 200 meters to the 350 meter plunge down to Tokkeåi (Tokke River). If you dare to throw a note down the plunge, the upward drift brings the note back.
Then back via Dalen you follow Rv 45 to Eidsborg Stave Church (dating from the 13th century), one of the two remaining stave churches in Telemark, and the Lårdal Village Museum. Here you’ll also find information about whetstone, which was exported to Europe from the early Viking Age.

From there you follow E134 from Høydalsmo to Morgedal, "Cradle of modern skiing" where Norsk Skieventyr ("The Norwegian Ski Adventure Centre"), rendering the history of Norwegian skiing from the Stone Age to the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994, should be visited.
At the Ski Adventure Centre you’ll also find the café "Skreppa" which serves traditional Norwegian food. You can also visit the cotter's farm where Sondre Nordheim was born.

For more information about the museums in the area, see: www.vest-telemark.museum.no
The museums have a combined admissions ticket which is valid for Åmdals Verk mines, Vest-Telemark Museum, Eidsborg Stave Church, Norwegian Ski Adventure Centre, Kviteseid Rural Museum and more. The ticket costs NOK 120 for adults and NOK 60 for children. It can be bought at the museums and at the tourist offices in Dalen, Seljord, Rauland, Fyresdal and Telemarkreiser in Skien.

Tour 2: BY BOAT THROUGH THE LOCKS OF THE BANDAK CANAL

By bus from Vrådal via Brunkeberg to Seljord along beautiful Lake Seljord, famous for its elusive sea monster, past Bø and Gvarv to Ulefoss. By canal boat through the locks, and across the lakes and canals of the Bandak Canal to Kviteseid.

Tour 3: DISCOVER FYRESDAL

Rv 41 along Lake Nisser, Telemark´s largest lake, 37 km long, passes the villages of Nissedal, Treungen and Tjønnefoss. (Alternatively, you may cross Lake Nisser by a tiny cable ferry to Fjone where you may choose between the road along the shores and beaches of the western banks of the lake, or crossing the mountain directly to Fyresdal).
Rv 355 over Våmur, 670 m above sea level with a splendid view of Lake Fyresvatn, the mountains beyond and the pleasant fields and forests of Fyresdal. Folkestadbygda, community centre with shops, tourist office and a small open air museum.
Rv 355 further on past Lake Skrevatn where majestic, shining cliffs rise from the shores, to Vråliosen and RV 38 back to Vrådal.

Tour 4: BØ SUMMERLAND, BØ

Rv 41 to Brunkeberg, the E 134 to Seljord and the Rv 36 to Bø. The Bø Summerland is a family park covering more than 400,000 sq.m.: Norway’s largest water park! You will find water switchbacks and pools of all kinds and sizes, all with heated water. We dare you to try the "Stomach Butterfly Slide”. See: www.sommarland.no
